Oatmeal stout -thought it would be bigger
Maybe it's me, but my oatmeal stout has been in bottle for a week and I tried it last night. It's ok but very week on the stout flavor, and the reason I made it was the oats were supposed the help the head, and I got very little head. Sorry no punning intended!!! It's a nice easy drinking beer but lacks the stout dryness. Maybe I'll use more hopps next time, I only used 1oz fuggles, my last export stout I used 3oz and that tasted better than Guinness. I have a weat on primary right now can't wait to try that.
Give it another week and you might get some better carbonation and better head.......retention. Oats add mouthfeel, make the beer thicker and creamier. So the Oatmeal stout won't be dry like a Guinness, but should still have a good amount of roasty goodness.
hope that helps some

Oats tend to be a little oily and can have a head lessening effect. I counter that with a little wheat malt sometimes.
As for drier, hops will balance out the malt, but not really dry it out. Maybe a lower mash temp or increase your attenuation by replacing some of your extract with simple sugar (depending on your method).
Thanks ,it does have a good roastytaste and it is easy to drink. I just never had an oatmeal stout befor. I can play around with this, cause anything stout can't be that bad.
