Once cold should beer stay cold?
Hey folks. I just brewed a nice light cream ale for some less adventurous drinkers. I have the beer in the fridge in a keg (1st time for that) and its carbed and ready to go. I did a cold crash on it to help clarify and it worked pretty well. Now the question is once you chill a beer does it need to stay that way? I am taking this to a party this weekend and would like to know if I need to keep the beer on ice or could I let it get to ambient and then just run it through a jocky box or something? If it can be allowed to warm up, what should I do with the pressure?
Second question is what should the serving pressure be? I know that with length of hose and such to maintain carb i have read i need to serve at 12 psig but that seems to still come out a little fast and foam. What serving pressure do you recommend? Just enough to get her out of the tap? I am using a 4 ft 3/16" hose with picnic tap. Thanks.
Ideally you'd want to keep it cold, but if you need to bring it out into ambient temp & push it through a jockey box I don't think that would be an issue. As far as serving pressure goes, you kinda need to see what works best for you. If it's foaming up too much then you probably need to dial back a little. I serve somewhere around 10 psi myself using a picnic tap.
I'm in agreement about keeping it cold.
If you're only taking the one keg, just put in a trash can or something.
Ice the bottom foot or so, that way it stays cold on the bottom, and wrap it in a trash bag.
Start around 10psi, and adjust as necessary, I usually end up around 8-9 with a picnic tap.
Whatever you do Have Fun.
your friends just told me they don't like cream ale. you'll need to send that keg to me. also, I'll need your tap and co2 tank and all the goodies to use the keg.
Thanks for the replies. I just filled a sixer of keepers and they are the most beautiful golden... Anyway, I will probably serve at about 8 psi and keep it cold. I am an engineer and would like to build some type of heat exchanger/cooler. Maybe just for wort cooling though and make a special korny cooler with a holster for a 20oz paintball co2 bottle. Saw something to this effect on youtube and it looked pretty good.

Hogarthe - I have expanded my palate beyond the MBC stuff but it still tastes good. I could put down a few of these pretty easy. I'll drink one for ya!!
