Proper way to plant rhizomes

I got my rhizomes in the mail today and was reading through the little booklet supplied by Freshops.  They say rhizomes should be planted vertically but the book "The Homebrewer's Garden" suggests planting them horizontally.  Is there a right and wrong way to do it or is it a matter of preference kind of thing?

Personally, I planted mine vertically.  The sprouts that were already coming out when they arrived appeared to be growing vertically so I went that way.  So far they're growing well.

We got 13 rhizomes, put them all in pots.  The lovely lady, with a degree in horticulture, sez you can plant them either way, just make sure that the roots are down.

They're all coming up.

Thanks guys.. Now that I finally got them I better get crackin' and plant them.

I also planted mine horizontally with roots up, sprouts down. They are very very hardy plants so it i hard to do wrong by them. You could probably lay them on the sidewalk and water them and they would be ok lol

How big are you pots and do you have plans to move them to the ground at somepoint in the future?

They are now in 1 gal. pots, filled with compost, in the greenhouse-

And will be transplanted to this arbor & the old corn crib behind it the first week of May.

I converted a raised bed garden to the hop arbor, & filled it with compost.  Hops are supposed to be "heavy feeders" & like rich loose soil.  We have a couple 4 legged manure factories just across from the garden.

Brewski, you are my hop god!
I love that arbor idea.  Looks fantastic!

Brewski that's exactly what I want to do as well, probably not till next year though.  Looks great!  I was thinking something like that with a picnic table in the middle for some very secluded backyard dining.
