Recipe screw up
I went ot LHBS and got stuff to brew tomorrow. Here's what I should have got:
3 gallon batch
no specific style
5 pds 2 row
1 pd munich
.25 pd 80 L crystal
.14 pd carapils
.14 caraf I
Cascade .2 oz 7.5% 60 Min
Williamette .1 oz 4.9% 60 Min
Centennial .1 oz ?? % 10 min
Williamette .1 oz 4.9% 10 min
3 gallons:
OG 1.049 (came out 1.052)
FG 1.009
IBU 17
found out instead of the .25 crystal and .14 carapils I was given .4 pds crystal and .6 pds carapils
Would like to know how the extra amoutns will affect the beer? everything was crushed together so I assume it will be sweeter than wanted and maybe increase IBU to offset but would like opinions of more experienced brewers. I am also assuming 60% efficiency as I am not very good at all grain and that is what I got the other two times I did try all grain.

I doubt there will be a dramatic difference. The small increase in the Crystal 80 will add a touch more color and flavor and the carapils will add a bit of more body, but like I said, probably not enough to make a difference. No big deal, brew on.

Thanks. I looked it up on google and found that combined it is suggested not to go over 20% of the grain bill with all the crystal malts. combined they come to 14% so it looks ok from that standpoint.
next time I'll crush the grains myself. LOL.
Making it tomorrow.

Actually did better efficiency wise. came out about 65%. OG is 1.052 (preboil, 3.5 gallons).
Recipe is the cream ale clone from another post.
didn't have enough cascade to use some for 2nd addition so I went with centennial for that.
US-05 yeast will get sprinkled onto wort when it gets to ferment temp.
Not as hard as last 2 times. didn't have to add DME to hit OG this time. woohoo! LOL.
trying to decide whether to go with 90 min boil or 60. 90 would boil off enough to add cold water to carboy and pour hot wort directly into it.
60 would mean having to wait till entire batch of wort cooled enough to add to carboy.
would still use 60 minutes for boiling hops.

That's the Shaftebury, isn't it? Or something close.
When I compared mine with the actual thing, the original was a tad maltier & a little less hoppy,
with 6.5% Carapils, 3.26% each Crystal 80 & Chocolate.
Yeah it's from your post. was trying to make the same thing but some of the grain amounts got screwed up. it tastes great. fermenting away happily now.

Excellent.
I've done 3 batches, with a new twist each time.
Getting pretty close to the original. Actually tried adding a little corn on the last one to enhance the creaminess.
Thanks to Giventofly, I got 3 cans from a trip he took to British Columbia. Still got one left.

I subbed a pound of Munich for some of the Pale malt. and didn't have enough cascade so I used centennial in place for the 10 minute addition. smells good.not sure if it will have creaminess to it though the 80L crystal and carapils were over doubled than normal due to mistake. LOL.
wasn't too sweet to taste though.

Well, I can't see where the extra C80 & carapils would have any negative effect.
it looks like I'll be going to BC in late Jan, maybe I can snag some of the original & get a few cans to you.

I think I have 2 cans left, if you need them.
I'm glad they helped.

Defcone. Personally, I think it will be totally screwed up. What I suggest is that you bottle it up, put it all in a box, and ship it out to me here in Seattle, and I will run it through my "chemical analysis lab," and give you a full report. That way, you won't have to waste your time trying to figure out if it's any good. ![]()
haha. givin dc a taste of his own medicine!
LOL. Funny. Knew it was coming sooner or later. LOL.
