Shelf Life?

How does the shelf life of home brew compare to that of commercially brewed beer?

In my experience, I haven't kept it long enough to really test it.

i think the shelf ilfe is almost the same and amazed to hear from you that you didnot even test your batch ,by the way hoe many times you have.

Hi michael, I tested the batches but not the shelf life of them.

Any beer I've made has been poured and enjoyed before it would have gone bad on the shelf.

Oh I am sorry it was some misunderstanding !smile
I think you were talking about some testing batches !

So there is a such thing as shelf life, If you drink beer after the life has died will you get sick or will it just taste nasty?

it is my understanding that the worst thing that can happen to beer is that it will taste bad.  i don't think anything that is deadly grows in it.  the alcohol and hops both have natuaral antibiotic properties.  beer usually doesn't last long enough around me for "going bad" to become an issue though.  why risk it, though?  drink faster.

lol thats funny yeah i dont even let it sit long enough for it to even taste bad.

Some homebrews can last a year or more pretty easily, especially those with high alcohol content.  I made a pale ale with some clove that I kept for over a year (I was sick and couldn't really drink much).  Even though it wasn't high in alcohol, it got much better over the year as the clove mellowed quite a bit.

I have stored specials brews for 1 year (sometimes to drink at the occasion it was brewed at one year previously, or share with a group of people that come through only once per year, holidays, etc.) and they have been great.  Homebrews, that is.  2 were dark porters, all were above 6% alcohol.  It is very important to keep them in a dark cool place.  Light can alter the taste, as can heat.  If you keep it in a fridge, you should keep it in a box or bag or something.  Opening the door repeatedly over a year can sometimes be too much light (depends on the beer of course).

That reminds of a situation several years ago when a friend lamente about Corona's clear bottles. He said it caused the beer to warm up faster.

I told him that I've never had one last long enough for it to make a difference.  :-)  :-)
