Spicy
When I hear some say, it's a spicy brew, I think about peppers.
Are they talking about hops when someone says a spicy brew?
It's all knew to me, and I'm experancing all kinds of new flavors, I just want to learn the lingo as well.
A spicy beer is hoppy right? Please enlighten me.
Marv.
I guess spicy to me does mean a little peppery. I've had a couple of brews brewed with jalapenos. I'm not sure I liked them, but they were very interesting.
A guy I know that is at the house from time to time to sample beer hates hops. He refers to anything with the hint of hops as 'spicy'. Personally, I just think he has bad taste.
Good question Marv, nothing has been added to our terms database. could it be more of the sensation given by the beer, tingles or a slight burning feeling? what do our BJCP guys think?
I guess that I think of a lot of things when I hear a beverage (more often wine) descibed as spicey. Peppery is certainly pretty common, but you can also include cinnamon or other spices.
Hadn't thought about cinnamon.
I reckon nutmeg could be included into that as well.
Marv.
I think it's more of a wine descriptor personally, unless the beer is a specialty brewed with a spice intentionally. Hops to me don't have a "spicy" character.
When I think of a "spicy" beer, I think of a beer that contains a boatload of hops.
Ever had Liberty Ale? That's what I would consider to be a "spicy" beer.
I just don't get spicy from hops. I know some people do though, "Spicy" doesn't appear on the beer judging flavor chart so I'm not even sure where it would fit.
cmanley, I agree, "spicey" is much more of a wine descriptor than a beer descriptor. Hops impart a citrus or piney taste, not a "spicey" character.
