Well, welcome to one of the least mentioned reasons to home brew... FRESHNESS!
If you've never had an IPA so fruity before then you must not be getting very fresh examples where you shop. Or at least the breweries that are being distributed to your area aren't making citrusy, grapefruit IPAs.
