Temperature Control for Lagering
I have a spare refrigerator in my basement and I was considering using it for some lagers. I've looked into what's available in terms of the temperature controllers/thermostats. Most homebrewing sites offer a dial version (Johnson Controls Refrigerator Thermostat - about $50) and a digital version (Ranco Electronic Temperature Controller - about $100).
I was just wondering if any of you have used these temp. controllers and if so, how well they work?
Because they work by turning the fridge/freezer on and off to maintain a relatively constant temperature, what kind of wear and tear can you expect to have? Any relevant information on the topic would be helpful/interesting.
I use the JC unit. It works well on my converted kegerator. I haven't had any problems with it, and I am using an old chest freezer.
