Thanksgiving Beers

Anyone serving homebrew or a commercial beer to be paired with your Thanksgiving eats?  I'm taking a couple of growlers to let the family peruse while we're scarfing down dinner.  I'll be bringing the Damn Devil Double IPA and the Ichabod Pumpkin ale.  The pumpkin ale came out really good!  First it starts off with just a really good beer taste and ends with some subtle pumpkin pie type of spices.  Should pair well with the food.  The IIPA will help send us to nap town after the turkey dinner.  The 135 drink tends to lay you out on the couch for a bit, ha.

No I'm not going to bother. I'm not a holiday person at all. Last year I finally tried a pumpkin ale for the first time. It was pretty good, but I didn't like it enough to brew even 3 gallons.

I just bring along whatever beer I have. Right now I have my late, late, late summer lemon wheat beer (which turned out awesome) and blackberry wheat (not as good), and I never seem to have trouble finding people to suck down the keg.

I like the idea of seasonal beers, but I don't go out of my way to make them.

That's cool.  Yea, the only reason I did a pumpkin beer was I had a request from a friend.  Once he mentioned it I was definitely intrigued and it ended up turning out really good.

That lemon wheat sounds really great though!

Oh yea, just saw this on suggestions for beers to enjoy with your turkey dinner.

Turkey Dinner beers.

I'll post the lemon recipe in the proper forum. I stole a recipe for it last year and used... like 4 lemon and a 1 oz bottle of extract. It didn't suck, but I wasn't impressed either.

I prefer to use real fruit. The blackberry I made was with extract, and I won't use it again.

The lemon wheat isn't "lemonade". There is no mistaking the lemon, but it's not overpowering. I was afraid 10 ?? lemon were too many in the 10 gallon batch, but it's perfect.

Speaking of pumpkins, I first saw the beer about 4 years ago at Thriftway. I almost bought it, but the sixer cost $8, and I wasn't about to shell out that much on a beer I never tried. I guess it was earlier this year when my friend Crystal had a sixer of it, so I tried one. To me it tasted exactly like I was drinking a pumpkin pie. Yes it was very good, but I don't want 5 gallons of it.

The thing that bothers me about microbrews is they are expensive, and for the most part, you can only buy a sixer of it. So if you have never tried Sierra Nevada Black Death Executioner Stout (yes I made that up), do you want to spend around $8 just to find out if you like it? Some stores won't sell a single beer out of a sick pack.

Anyway, I will go post that recipe.

I hear you on the price of micros.  I'm lucky in that the Whole Foods near me allows buying of singles and I know the beer guy pretty well, so if I just want to try something he'll crack one open and put the rest on the single bottle sale rack.  That's why I'm a big fan of the bomber bottles.  You can try a bunch and they are usually only $4.  I also kind of think of like this, if I were to go to a bar and buy 6 Budweisers, I'd end up paying the same price as picking up a $10 6 pack of micro at the grocery store.

On the pumpkin beers, I've found the commercial examples really far and ranging.  Some are all spice, but others are very subtle.  Take Smuttynose Pumpkin for example, it's a great beer by itself.  You can really taste the hops, sitting right around 35 IBUs.  The spice is simple and not overpowering, just enough to be slightly overshadowed by the hops.  It's pretty much the only pumpkin (other than mine which I modeled after the Smuttynose) that I can drink multiple of in one sitting.

Just made a pumpkin ale, never would have considered it but my brother suggested it and it turned out damn good. The ladies sure seem to love it, also. Used a fair amount of spices in it but baked then boiled a pumpkin with the wort and it rounded it out very nicely. Good beer! One friend said it was the best beer she's ever had period. Sure makes you feel good to hear people say that!

Damn Devil Double IPA and the Ichabod Pumpkin ale sounds good dmofot. For sure you've celebrated your Thanksgiving Day perfectly.
