Too strong a starter?...
So I just made a starter for my upcoming brew session on Saturday... I pretty much boil a gallon of water down to 3 qts, add 1Lb of DME, 1 cap of servomyces and it always works fine, usually with a pretty good fermentation in primary... This time, I was super busy trying to multitask, and I let it boil for a lot longer..When all was done, I transferred to a 1 gallon jug, and it wasn't as much as I thought..
I took 2 readings, and got 1.069 and 16.9P.... So is that too strong, or is borderline?..
I shoot for a 1.040 starter. You could add some cooled boiled water to dilute it. I'm not a yeast whisperer like 1n1m3g but I think such a dense sugar solution would stress the yeast.
I would say to definitely dillute it down. I usually fill my pot with 1.5 gallons of water, let it boil for 15 minutes with a full pound of DME, and wind up with about 1.25 gallons of 1.038 ish starter wort. You want them yeaties to really rip through it.
Yup, +3 for diluting a concentrated starter.
Damn...is it too late guys? I have no activity, no krausen, nothing. Just a bunch of yeast sitting at the bottom of the jug...
I'm going to go boil some water and let it cool...or maybe I could add bottled spring water from the fridge..
F***!!!! If this is doesn't start, I'm screwed for this weekend. My brewshop doesn't have any more of this yeast, and I really like how it went in last years batch..
Arhghghg!!!!!!
Yeah, maybe add a bit of sanitized water and give it a good swirl to get that yeast back in suspension. How old was the vial/pack of yeast that you added and did you add it last night? It's probably OK and will get started over night tonight. Hope all works out! Cheers!
Out of curiosity, what strain is are you using?
I've decided to leave it alone. I don't to risk infection.. I also posted this over at Tastybrew, and a few people I have some good respect for convinced me to not touch it...although, with 1m1n3g being the God of yeasts here, I may still add a cup of warm sanitized water tomorrow to give it a kick if nothing changed in it...
FPB, I'm using WLP006 Bedford British Ale, and this is going in my house IPA. Used it last year, and it was unbelieveably awesome. Wasn't expecting to be able to use it again this early in the year, but WL changed their Platinum yeast release schedule so I was able to get some a couple of weeks ago...
Brewchez mentioned that yeast in a recipe I posted a while back. My LHBS doesn't stock WL, but maybe I'll be able to find it online somewhere. Is there a Wyeast equivalent?
I am fairly sure that Austin Homebrew has that in stock, if not we can get it.

Quick update....it's all good guys! I got home today, and with the warmer weather outside it pushed the inside temp to almost 70...which got the jug to almost explode! I cleaned up the mess, and now it's just starting to calm down.. So I think tomorrow will be okay..
Thanks to all!!
And if any MA locals are bored tomorrow, you're welcome to swing by and watch my brewing, aka debauchery display.. Nothing big like the 24th coming up, but if you're wicked local let me know and I'll get you the addy...
