Transfer from Brew Pot to Carboy

What are some of your guys' processes for transferring the cooled wort, into a glass 6.5gal Carboy?

Strainer and Funnel and poring from a 30qt brew pot seems a little difficult to maneuver without slopping  wort all over the place.

They are cheap, like $12. Best thing I ever bought for homebrewing.

So your process, is to siphon it out of the kettle, into the primary, and then shake it up to aerate?

what about straining? or does the racking cane and tip take care of that?

I just use a funnel.  I haven't brewed alone yet, though, so I can see where using the autosiphon would be a good way to go (and yes, that is one of the best tools ever).

I don't siphon from the kettle. I use measuring cups since they are small, and I pour the wort through a metal strainer which in turn goes into a funnel, then into the primary.

Anytime I rack from fermenters, I always use the auto siphon with a hose clip on the bucket.

As for aeriating, you can either shake it up, or do like I did... I bought a $6 (??) small fish tank air pump, some tubing, an air stone, and I drop it to the bottom of the fermenter as I rack my wort from the kettle. Works like a charm. LOTS of foam though.

You could drill out your brew kettle and put a spigot on it. they have the weldless fittigns that aren't really too expensive. and if you are going to go the aerating stone direction I would go with a pure oxygen tank set-up. you can pick up the disposible ones at a hardware store for like 8 bucks and it only takes about 30 seconds to aerate your wort. I could not believe the difference in my fermentations when I went to that set-up.
Cheers

The only deal with pure oxygen is I have heard that you cannot get them refilled without some type of medical certificate. I went to a homebrew meeting about a year ago and like 5 people all stepped forward and said that.

I may be wrong though.

cubx, all you have to do if you want to go the refillable route, but i did mention "disposible" didn't I? Is go to any welding supply that deals with welding gasses as wella equipment, which most of them do and they will either refill or exchange your canister, the same thing they do with CO2 tanks. I have also found that fire extinguisher maintenance/supplies deal with a lot of refilling and recertifing of CO2 tanks. also you need no kind of medical certificate to buy oxygen, you can get it at lowes if you want, and all the equipment (minus the stone) to build your O2 set-up.

I too have heard you need to have a prescription, or a license to refill oxygen bottles (my wife is an occupational therapist). Buying disposable, non refillable canisters, im not sure on.

I have heard stories though about people calling places that DO refill O2 tanks, and explaining to them it was for homebrewing, and offered to trade a 6'er of homebrew for the tank refill... Not a bad deal if you ask me.. smile

I just use a large funnel that has a pop-out strainer inside. The strainer gets clogged easily (even when using grain bags), and I brew alone, but I am very happy and never had a problem with this method.
