Whats in your beer garden?
This year i am growing cilantro (for my coriander ipa), yarrow and two kinds of hops. I was wondering if anyone else is growing anything interesting to brew with, to give me some new ideas.
Just prickly pear and saguaro. I'm hoping to be able to gather enough fruit to make a tiswin type drink this fall.
I love cilantro - would you mind sharing your recipe for that IPA?
Good grief, I have all the ground ivy (creeping charlie) you can ever need for a batch. I think I read this was used in place of hops at one time in "The Homebrewer's Garden" book. It does have a very aromatic smell when I run over it with the lawnmower. Too timid to actually try it however....
Cheers!
Two types of hops, Jalapenos, Lemmon Grass, Mint, Oragano, Celantro, Thyme, Rosemary, Spearmint, Catnip and Dandelions.
Hey, Skervy
I've got what looks to be a bumper crop of prickly pears going, and I've been tinkering with a recipe for them. Having never heard the term, I just gotta ask, what is a 'tiswin'?
That coriander IPA piqued my interest, too, vinyalwhl...

need to find my brew book.. i have been tinkering with the recipe for awhile now.. i usually do half batches.. its interesting
This is from my last attempt
Coriander IPA (5gallons)
2-Row malt - 11lbs
60L Crystal - .50 lbs
Wheat malt - .5lbs
Centennial 1.5oz FWH
Amarillo .5oz at 15min, 10min, 5min, flameout
Freshly crushed coriander .25oz at 15min, 10min, 5min
Irish moss at 15mins
Wyeast American ale II, or Whitelabs Nottingham (this was good)
Mash at 148F. I used my well water which is relatively hard so if you are using spring or distilled I would add some gypsum. Boil 60min and add hops and coriander at the schedule. Cool and pitch.
This year I may supplement some of the homegrown with indian coriander found at the market, for a more complex flavor. Be wary of the coriander additions, I found that its easy for them to get overpowered by the hops and if you add too much it tastes kinda like metallic celery, thats the best way i can describe it. I was also thinking of adding some Solrachi Ace, the lemony japanese hops, because i think it may go well with the coriander. This also had about 45IBUs so its not very bitter.
centenial, cascade, cilantro, jalapenos not really for beer but might try, and tomatos more for home made salsa witch goes great with beer...
