Yeast starter wort
Has anyone use a product found a most grocery stores called ' Malta ' for a yeast starter? I see this product in the Ethnic Foods section; along with a lot the Mexican food specialties. It's sold in a six-pack of 12 oz bottles. The label includes some ingredients I'm unsure of so...the question.
Thanks,

I think it would work fine. It's just essentially unfermented beer right? Get it to room temp and pitch yeast.
If it feeds the yeast it'll work. You can always pour off everything but the yeast slurry before you pitch.
I think that would be a good idea as well, given you're not 100% sure what's in it. Pitch the yeast let it go for a day or two, cool it down and decant the top section before pitching into your wort.
Malta? Huh, I'll have to keep an eye out for that.
It's basically Beer-Tea, unfermented wort, brewed with barley and hops.
My wife is from Puerto Rick, where kids drink the stuff like colas. It is really good, and very sweet. As cmanley says, it is basically an unfermented beer. It is carbonated, though. I have never thought of trying to use it as a starter, but it seems to me that it could be good experiment to try it. I would probably have some back up yeast on hand just in case, though.
