Half-assed corking
Hi All,
I wanted to preserve my mead without spending $30 for a corked and $23 for corks, so I bought 50 tasting corks for $12.5.
I plan to put the tasting corks in, wait 2 days and then dip the tops of the bottles in wax from melted candles twice; In hopes to create an airtight seal with the wax.
Will this work.
BTW I don't care if it doesn't look as good as a corked bottle. All I care is that I didn't pay $53
I agree with you on the corker. The table model isn't worth it, IMHO.
I bought a floor model for $70. But I will do over 100 bottles this year. If I never bottle again, that was only an extra 70 cents/bottle. If I do another 100 next year, the cost per bottle is only 35 cents. It’s getting pretty cheap.
$23 for corks is pretty high or is that for 100? I got 30 top quality corks for $8. The next level was 30 for $5. Sixty good quality corks is only $10 - cheaper than your tasting corks and of better quality.
Now add that you want to preserve the mead for several years - I believe I'd do all I could to protect them.
If only doing one or two small batches, yea, the floor corker wouldn't be worth the expense. But the table model would be. Again IMHO.
