Hazelnut Mead

On a brewing mailing list I read an unusual request. Does anyone have a recipe for Hazelnut Mead? I didn't think nuts were part of the mead brewing process, and didn't think bees would be collecting from hazelnut trees.

From what I have seen, the nuts are treated in the same fashion as you would any other spice. You would take them and crack them into pieces that could be strained out later just like you would do with whole nutmeg (crack them and add them). If you wanted to cheat, you could just add a flavored tincture to the mead. However, I think that the tincture method would be rather defeatist and only serve the purpose of flavor.

Hazelnut mead is actually a very old Irish form of mead and there are references to it in folklore, mythology, and traditions (both Pagan and Christian). Off the top of my head, there is a reference to Fionnghuala and the drinking of hazelnut mead.

Thanks!!!!
