Hopped Mead!

Just recently got back from a beer fest in Denver I go to every year.   One of the highlights of the trip is always going to a meadery outside of boulder. This year at the fest the meadery had a hopped mead. It was awesome!!! I have never made mead before but I sure do love it. Has anyone heard of this type of recipe before, and would they like to share?

BTW, the name of the place was Redstone Meadery, if you are ever in Boulder, take the tour.  It rocks!

if you go here  http://www.basicbrewing.com/index.php?page=video
on this  date  February 7, 2007 and its a tour of that meadery
its two guys that brew and do podcasts

It's called Braggot.

I thought Braggot was mead made with malt? While it may have hops it doesn't always have hops.

Malt or hops.

I made an orange mead with hops about 5 years ago.  It was great.  It's been too long to remember exactly what I used, but the recipe was on Cat's Meow3.  Look there for an orange methaglin recipe.

Per: 2008 BJCP Judging Guidelines-

26B. Braggot
A Braggot is a mead made with malt.

Aroma: Depending on the sweetness, strength and base style of beer, a subtle to distinctly identifiable honey and beer character

Flavor: Displays a balanced character identifiable as both a beer and a mead

Overall Impression: A harmonious blend of mead and beer, with the distinctive characteristics of both.

Ingredients: A braggot is a standard mead made with both honey and malt providing flavor and fermentable extract.  Originally, and alternatively, a mixture of mead and ale.  A braggot can be made with any type of honey, and any type of base beer style.  The malt component may be derived from grain or malt extracts.  The beer may be hopped or not.

I've got a Dark Braggot due to go to secondary any day now.  Haven't smelled it yet, but looking forward to it.

I am reasonably certain this is the recipe I used:

I did not include the ginger.
