It should not have taken any longer than about 24 hrs. (generally a lot less especially with the amount of sugars present in mead.) What type of yeast did you use. If it was dry did you rehydrate?
How old was your yeast? I recently made a wheat beer using a wyeast smack pack that was past the recommended date, I should have made a starter with it to "re-energize" the yeast but didn't do it. When I added the pack it hadn't swollen yet as it should but it was aroud 1:30 in the morning and I had to work the next day. It took the wheat over a day to start, had me a little nervous but it turned out fine. Four days is quite a bit too long, though. There is a possibility it may have soured it some. I would try re-hydrating another champagne yeast and pitching it as soon as possible. May all ready be bad but it's probably worth the buck or two to try to get it going.

i used red star champain yeast it was a new packet I rehydrated it according to the package. I will re pitch tonight to see if that helps

I've used the same yeast pack a few time myself and never had a problem. I hope it turns out for you. Good luck!

thanks for everyone's help I re pitched last night and this morning there is action in the air lock slow action but it is starting to work.
