Mead Day
Did anybody make up any mead for the AHA Mead Day on saturday? I made a 6 gal. batch of the Bill Pfeifer Commemorative Mead. The batch called for 10 lbs. cherries, 8lbs raspberries and 20 lbs. of honey. Man I spent a fortune on fruit for this one but hey in couple of years it will all be worth it. Luckily one of my fellow brewers here is also a bee keeper and donated all of the honey to me! I have it fermenting at 65 in the chest freezer right now and it is banging away nicely.
I made the Flight 19 Barleywine Mead recipe I saw on gotmead.com. I added 6 pounds of honey after the boil and will be adding 9 more tomorrow afternoon. I can't wait to see what it turns out like.
Barley wine mead! Now that sounds interesting. Did you just brew a small barley wine and then adding honey in stages?
Yes. I made a 3.5 gallon barley wine (english style) and racked it onto 6 pounds of honey in primary. Tonight I will rack onto 9 more pounds of honey and some lalvin 1118 and let that go for a week or two. Depending on the flavor/gravity I may go to a third with a few more pounds of honey.
Very cool. Guess you'd call that a braggot. I'd ask you to let me know how it turns out but I imagine this one will be aged for upwards of a year or more. I plan on doing something similar in the future.
I didnt even know there was a mead day. Guess it doesnt pay to be oblivious....
I have a straight mead made from Tawari Honey that I will taste in about 11 more months (just bottled it),but that Melomel you're making Andrew, sounds awesome. Cant wait to hear how it turns out!
I kicked off a Chocolate Aphrodisiac Mead.......yummmmm!

Chocolate and mead? Hmmm... can't "picture" it.... but then again I can picture honey and chocolate just fine and it sounds yummy. There's another one I can't wait to hear the results on.

Check out beertown.org Lot's of cool stuff and happenings. If you're not a member of the AHA I strongly recommend it. Zymurgy subscription, tech talk email forum, pub discounts...
This Saturday is mead day again. Anyone celebrating and making mead? Check here for more info: http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/p … -darkness.
I was thinking about making a dry mead, maybe add some raspberries or strawberries? would be awesome to make it sparkeling as well might keg it up and see what happens.

I was thinking a dry mead as well but Im thinking something along the lines of honeydew or another melon. Good luck ID let me know how it goes.
I've got a lower ABV 6%, sparkling Apricot w/ a touch of cinnamon working now. A semi-sweet, just back sweeten with 1 - 2# honey for 5gal. Potassium sorbate & into the keg. With the lower ABV, they don't need much aging, and the ladies love 'em.
Our club opted to move "Make Mead Day" to coinside with "Learn To Homebrew Day" (the first Saturday in November) due to the AZ temps.
Brewed a cyser today. Couldn't brew this Saturday. all went well.
