Take refract meter readings
Hi Everyone,
My mead is on day seven with active fermentation since it warmed to about 72f overnight should drop again tonight to 66 - 68f where it has been . . .
from my reading I can expect to be in the primary for a month so should I bother the mead to take refract meter readings while it is apparently quite active?
Well, it's up to you.
Your not going to learn anything at this point that's going to change how you treat your mead. You already know the basics -- still actively fermenting -- so you're going to keep it in primary for a bit longer anyway.
On the other hand, you will learn to be more comfortable with your refract meter, and you will learn a bit more about your mead. Some day I'm planning to take a refract meter measurement daily of my mead just so I can do a chart of % completed / time (which is presumably pretty close to an exponential decay curve, but still, I'd like to see it). The more you know, the more you'll enjoy the process, and the more comfortable you'll be with it.
Thanks
I wanted to apply the "Staggered Nutrients Feeding" that I read about which required a laboratory approach to monitoring and nurturing the yeast . . . however, I manage to measure the full amount of nutrients/energizers and apply the hydrated batch to the starter so that plan is on hold.
For now I believe it best to just observe until it approaches the secondary.
