Absolutly ridiculous!!!

So I was browsing TastyBrew a few minutes ago, and found the recipe for what I believe is probably the most bitter brew I've seen lately, especially with the hops shortage.....

Aptly named, "F@%K the Hop Shortage IPA"---It clocks in with 15, yes 15, ounces of Cascade through timed additions, PLUS two 5 oz dry hop periods, giving an IBU of 180!!   

seriously, how unneccessary was this....even the brewer called the most wasteful beer ever brewed...

Just thinking about drinking that beer reminded me of the Miller "bitter beer face" campaign back in the late 90s and the look on that guys face after drinking a bitter beer.  Anyone who wants to make/post a recipe for a beer like that is doing just it for the shock value of it.  He doesn't sound too smart either if you read the "description" part of the recipe.

 

In defense of the recipe (not in defense of the recipe author), I've used over a pound of hops in a recipe before.  While you can easily match a recipe's IBU levels by using less hops overall, but more during the bittering phase, it just doesn't taste the same as late hopped beers.  I could see making a recipe like this if you had a lot of left over hops from the previous years batch and you wanted to make room for the new years hops - NOT - if I was going to have to go out and pay some ridiculous $30+ in hops for one recipe.

Pliny the Elder uses something close to 17 ounces of hops, although about 7 of that is dry hops, and I gotta say, it's probably the best double IPA I have ever tasted.  I had it on tap and it was like eating a nice fresh hop cake, so smooth and full of flavor.  It's one of the originals for hop heads and it still reigns supreme.

Damn, I think I gotta brew up a Pliny clone now...

 

I have not had pliny the elder.  Sounds like I should try it - or at least plan it as a future brew. big_smile

 

I wonder if that amount of hops effects the level of AA extraction.  I imagine it would lower it.  Either way, that'll put hair on ur chest.

What I've heard is that anything over 100-125 IBUs pretty much goes to waste, since the beer will have reached AA saturation.  I've made a couple of beers with over 100 IBUs and one that was around 200 IBUs and there really wasn't much change in bitterness, yet flavor and aroma was different.  So my experience up to this point would back up the IBU saturation claim.
