American Pale Ale
This is a simple recipe that myself and a fellow brewer came up with. We wanted an APA that was basic, not hoppy, but had some flavor. So far I have only tried one of the batches. I personally didn't care for it much. Didn't hate it, but I found it kind of boring.
However, I had 3 others try it and they all really liked it. Maybe I just expect more from myself.
Here is the 10 gallon all grain recipe.
Grain bill:
18# 2 row domestic pale
1# crystal 10L
1/2# honey malt
Hop bill:
1 oz Amarillo 9.2% AA @ 60 minutes
1 oz Cascade 7.3% AA @ 20 and 5 minutes
Irish moss
Strike temperature = 151F
I typed up the IBU once and I think it came out to around 28.
Yeast: US 56 and Wyeast 1275
OG = 1.065
FG = 1.006 (US 56)
ABV = 7.6%
The cascade is a little high on AA this time. Since we didn't want death bitter, we decided to use the equivalent of a 1/2 per 5 gallons.
I have only kegged and tried the US 56 version. The 1275 is still in the secondary.
Love me some honey malt in my IPAs! Definitely a unique malt.
