Any sugestions on a good spring beer?



I'm looking for a good cream ale or other light ale to brew for the spring.  I am wanting to brew a strawberry blonde for this summer but I can't get good fruit yet.  Any suggestions are appreciated.  Right now I have a Eropean Lager bottled, Mac & Jacks in secondary, and a vanilla bourbon porter in first.



 

My suggestions are a saison (see MA brewday saison for an outstanding recipe by 1n1m3g), a kolsch, or a maibock, (gotta get on the ball if you want to have an april showing of that)

 

I've decided to put a heather ale together for this spring. I'll be using a fraoch clone recipe.

I would have loved to have done a miabock but I don't have a rancor for my fridge yet sad  I love miabocks so much I'm afraid I wouldn't like one made with an ale yeast. Lucky for me the local brewery here puts out a killer one every spring.

 

I'll be making a kolsch or belgian wit within the next couple weeks for spring. A fruit beer with a wheat base might be good for spring too. You might consider canned fruit purees at the local homebrew suppliers. They are already sanitized and you can add them to secondary without worry about contamination. If you want to use strawberried out of season use frozen ones. They are sterile also.

Try a Kolsch for spring. There is a BKB community brew recipe on this website that turned out pretty good for most of the brewers.

 

Comments please-

What about using strawberry, raspberry, etc. preserves right off the grocery store shelf.
Picked at the optimum ripeness, nothing in them but fruit, sugars, citrus acid, & pectin.
Maybe dissovle in hot water & add to the secondary.

Just curious if anyone has tried.

 

I've used frozen raspberries from the grocery store and have had good results.  There were only a few ingredients listed on the package... I think it may have just been "fruit, sugar, and pectin." or somethign like that.  There definitely weren't any weird additives.

 

Maybe this discussion is a good opportunity to start up the BKB community Brew for Spring 2009?

I've been thinking about that lately.  I finally started participating in them and then it seems they lost steam.  This winter is the first season we've missed.  It seems this forum has been getting more and more traffic and new users lately so maybe this is a good time to resurrect the seasonal community brew.

I have been thinking about spring beers lately... maybe a saison or a blonde ale.. maybe even a fruity wheat?

My friends have drank a lot of my beer, but this one moves FAST.   I had another glass last night after a few days away from it and realized just how good it really is.

I got another waiting in a secondary to replenish the stock.

 

Okay...so I'll start up a thread for 2009 Spring Community Brew vote......Add suggestions if you like....

I did think of one thing though.....Webby, we did a Kolsch last year for our Spring Community Brew...should we do another, or try to go with more variety?  What do you guys (and Jen) think?

OK here's what I decided on. 

Cream Ale

4.5 lbs. Dry Light Extract
1 lbs. Dry Rice Extract

1 oz. Tettnanger boiled 45 min.
1 oz. Saaz boiled 15 min.

Yeast : Safale US-05
