Applejack
My grandmother was telling me if I out apple cidar out in the winter let it freeze and drink the part of the apple cidar that does not freeze its called applejack and it will get you really drunk. Any one ever hear of this!
Your grandmother is giving you advice on how to get drunk?

It is true...although technically, it falls under distillation and is not legal to do. From what I have read, they used to put hard cider into a barrel & leave it outside during the coldest part of the year. Every so often, they would drain it using a hot poker, and repeat the process. While somwhat time-consuming, eventually you would get something pretty potent indeed.
Is that the same as when your beer ices up in the freezer? If you drink the non icey part it will be quicker to get drunk on?
Distilling is illegal?? lol
I'm far from an expert, but yes this was done in the past to increase the potency of cider. My understanding is that they called it applejack. It is not distillation though. Distillation is removing one checmical (alcohol) from the rest of it's buddies (water, harsh hangover stuff, yeah real technical lingo here). This freezing method is different because you are really just removing the water from cider and increasing the concentration of everything that doesn't freeze at the same temp. as water. This is good because it's less equipment intensive than distillation, but this is bad because it concentrates all of the impurities that make you feel like crap in the morning. There are even mild poisons (besides alcohol, hehehe) in cider that can make it dangerous to use this method of creating applejack. As far as legal or illegal, if it's in your own home for your personal consumption, who cares? Just don't go getting yourself a Darwin award doing it. As a final note, I don't think I'll try it. I like the taste of cider and am quite happy with 10% alcohol.

Yup, remember "ice" beer?
Just add some champagne yeast, put on an airlock, let it set on your fridge for 2 or 3 weeks, refrigerate an enjoy.
cheers.
BTW don't drink the yeast cake in the bottom of the bottle.
Marv.
thank you guys , yes my grandmother was asking about my beer brewing and telling me how they used to get drunk back in the day. I might try the applejack for the hell of it lol
I've had something similar to what's described here and I can attest to it's vile taste. Although it certainly gets it's job done quick. ![]()
