Bachelor Party Brew

OK, my friend is getting married in June, and for his bachelor party, I would like to brew a batch.  I would like a few suggestions fro the boards for a unique recipe I can do for this.  I don't lager in the spring/summer so I need to keep this to an ale.  He likes quite a few types of beer, but does seem to prefer the bigger more alcoholic brews.

His funeral is in June eh? Sorry to hear it. smile

Amber, double IPA, scotch, ESB. What does he usually drink?

Hands down, if its a party, I would be brewing a tough IPA... maybe like a Sierra Nevada Bigfoot clone.  Hop the piss outta it and make it 8-10%.  If its all guys, you shouldn't have any nay-sayers. smile

but if you want something more user friendly I would go with a mild brown or mild ESB.

I would roll the dice a little bit, stay away from wheats and other light beers, maybe it will be a hit!

I got A great Recipe for a "Old Wobbler Honey" this is a very high ABV beer. you won't want to drink a 6'r and try ice skating.  If you would like something like this, let me know, and I will post it.  It's an extract beer  Mine came out at about 12%.

Amber, double IPA

Now theres an idea...a super hoppy Imperial Amber.  Something a little different with something we all know.

I was thinking something that  a unique twist on a typical style beer.  I personally don't like wheat beers too much, so I was not planning on doing one of those.  He isn't a hop head, and I know that he doesn't really like beers like Pliny the Elder too much, so I will probably avoid a big IPA or the like as well.

The Imperial Amber sounds interesting (although I would have to cut back on the super hoppy part)... as does im4's suggestion.

The hoppy thing is something I just don't get. Most pubs that I have gone to I hear over and over that men "prefer super hoppy beers" and most are hopheads.

I call BS on that one. I am not, and never will be, a hop head. Of the drinkers I know, most don't like a hoppy beer at all. Once when I was buying hops locally, every single hop the owner pointed to had at least 9% AA. I finally asked her "do you assume everybody loves a really hoppy beer?" She looked dumbfounded and asked if I was a hop head. Obviously not.

I am perfectly happy with an amber or wheat beer.

My suggestion would be a double gravity amber ale. I posted my signature recipe here a little while ago. That has been a hit with many non-beer drinkers.

Different strokes for different folks...

I'd say a large majority of my friends are hopheads, including my wife.  One of the homebrew clubs I belong to has a couple hundred members, while I only see probably 60 of them regularly, a good amount of them are also hopheads.  Big hops seems to be something you either love or hate, nothing wrong with that.

IPA and big hops beers will always be my go to beers, but on the flip side, I really love a nicely balanced and malty beer.  My Scottish 80 Export goes down so easy it's amazing!  I try not to assume everyone is a hophead, but being one myself I tend to make hoppy suggestions...cause that's what I would do, ha.

If he likes big beers, but isn't a big fan of the hops and you don't like wheat beers...well it sounds like you'll be figuring out a style soon enough.  An amber would definitely be a good beer and does well in the imperial range.  Maybe also look at doing something like a stronger Nut Brown Ale (Double Nut Brown), an Irish Red Ale, or possibly a Scotch Ale (Wee-Heavy).  Brew it up into that 9% range and make sure to save a few bottles to age, so you can give it to him on their 1 year anniversary...

I found this in our recipe section:

Strong Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy

Might be a good fit.  7.1% ABV might be a bit low for what you are looking for, but its still a good amount of alcohol.

8# LPME
2# Honey ---1# boil, 1# into secondary
1# White rice syrup solids
1.5 oz Centennial  (bittering) 60 min
1.5 oz Cascade (flavor, Finishing) 1 oz 20 min, .5 oz steep for 5 mins
CA Ale, American ale, coopers 15 gram dry ale.... your choice
personally, I would substitute the hops to something with a little lower A%. than the centennial.  possibly a williamette???

OK, I am thinking along the lines of an imperial amber.  Here is what I have come up with so far:

15 lbs Two Row
1 lbs Munich
1/2 lb Victory
4 oz Chocolate
1/2 lb Carapils

1.5 oz Cascade at 60 min
0.5 oz Cascade at 5 min

Wyeast 1056

Pretty basic, but it should have nice malt character as well as some nice color.  Pretty understated hops, but enough to tell they're there.  I get that is should come to about 9 - 10%.

All of my amber recipes always had crystal malt in them. Never seen any without. The munich is a nice addition though. I'm wondering... what is the purpose of 4 oz of chocolate? You won't taste that.

The chocolate just provides a bit of coloring, nothing more.  I could always add some crystal, say a lb or so of 20L?

Unless you really want a dark color for looks only, I wouldn't bother.

As for the crystal, 20L is going to give you a pretty light malty and caramel flavor. I would try something like 40L or 60L instead. Whichever crystal you decide on,  1/2# to 1# is probably enough.
