Beer Can Turkey?

Has everyone here heard of the novelty recipe for BBQing a chicken or turkey where you poke holes in a can of beer and insert it in the bird prior to cooking?

I've tasted it. It was good, but I keep thinking it's more about the novelty and conversation piece than flavour, maybe.

I have heard of it - its quite popular, actually.  I think you are right, though, mostly a novelty...

My Aunt likes to make it, and many BBQ supply places offer stands to hold the beer can upright on the grill...I have never personally tried it, but it does catch my curiousity...I wonder what difference beer variety makes on the final flavor?

Mmmm...Guinness Chicken tongue

We regularly brew beer-cooked brats, and I can definitely tell the difference when we use different quality beers to cook the brat.  I would imagine that the type of beer would make a huge difference.

I think you are right about the novelty of this recipe.  But a better way of incorporating beer into your barbequing is to marinate the chicken in the beer.  I have done this with very cheap beer before (the kind of crap that someone brought over and left at my house that I have no interest in drinking because I am a beer snob) and it turns out really delicious.  Beer is great to use in cooking in general.  Besides using it for chicken, I have also used it to make baked winter squash and it was absolutely delicious.  (I used Newcastle for the squash).

Im not sure about the Novalty. I mean ive tried it both ways and realy think that the beer infuses a GREAT flavor. Now it may be a bit psycosemtic but who knows. I still think a darker beer as opposed to a light adds the most flavor.

Beer Can Chicken

Pop the top, shove the can up the chickens arse, cook. The beer will flavor the chicken some but it's mostly for keeping it moist.

I love cooking with beer.  After having beer brats for the first time I was amazed at some of the neat flavors you can get with beer.  I've never heard of the turkey thing, but I do almost all of my of BBQing with beer now.  As mentioned before the stronger the beer the better!

Hi,
I like the idea of using brew in my cooking.  However, I do not
want to stick a can in my food.  I'll have to come up with a
different answer.  I had not heard of sticking a can of beer
inside a roasting bird.

My mom used to pour beer on our steaks when she cooked them
on the grill.  mmmm!

I have tried both ways---marinating and gently placing the can in the bird's arse.  Both seem to give different flavors.  When using the violating method the beer cooks and infuses into the flavor of the bird.  Believe it or not a plain can of Bud makes a pretty good tasting bird.

And if anyone is into frying their thanksgiving bird try injecting it with beer amongst other flavoring.  We won't cook a bird any other way now.

I've also had sausages barbecued with beer on aluminum foil, poured on as it was cooking. That was tasty, too.

Has anybody marinated beef in beer before cooking?

Beer can chicken is what I usually make. Do it in a vertical water smoker. Put rub on the chicken, shove 1/2 full can of beer with some rub sprinkled in the can into the cavity, stood vertically. Smoke the bird til reaches at least 170 internally.  Mighty fine eating.
