Read John Palmers How to Brew.  It will give you a ton of information as far as beer, brewing, and all the little things you need to know.  It's available online free at , howtobrew.com.  Also, check out Ray Daniels' Designing Great Beers.  Another awesome read that focuses more on the recipe, and how formulate a great brew..
