Coffee stout//Java Stout...
No I am not the creator of this recipe I just really like it and want to share.

6 2/3-lbs Dark Malt extract
1/2-lbs Crystal Malt (40L)
1/2-lbs Chocolate Malt
1/4-lbs Roasted Barley
1/2-cup Good quality coffee (grounds) *I used Gevalia coffee*
1 1/2 Oz. Fuggles Hops
1 Oz. Tettnanger Hops
1 pack Irish Ale yeast
**Priming** either Corn Sugar or Dark Dry Malt extract.
I used Dry Dark Malt extract 1 1/4cup...

It calls for 7-10 days in primary and 7-10 in secondary... then age in bottle for 7-10 days. So there you are. It is very tasty for those who like a stout and coffee.

My SG did not change for several days after the first Fermentation. I bottled after 10 days of fermenting. I kept the beer at a Temp of about 70F.

That's a pretty low OG for this beer, by my calculations you should have closer to 1.050. Likewise, that's a really high FG and it should be below 1.020, hopefully close to 1.015 or so. You might check your hydrometer to make sure it's still reading correctly and that you have adjusted for temperature.

Yeah I second that. When I started all grain (read: I sucked), I was regularly getting an OG of about 1.030 until I realized what I did wrong. Now the lowest gravity I get is 1.035, and that is usually with my pale ales. Normally I aim for 45-55.
The highest FG I've had was around 1.015, but I had a high OG.
You won't be getting much alcohol with the gravities you mentioned.
the recipe called for starting of OG 1.040, mine was acutally 1.050 (logs they are great!) plus my temp. during the fermentation probably jumped up and down a LOT causing the gravity (to my understanding) to change. We had a mild winter until about two weeks in to the last bit of fermenting it dropped to very low temps (IN TEXAS OF ALL PLACES!). As though this is my first Porter/stout I will keep the knowledge you have passed to me for future brewing of this nature. ![]()

I hope you put the bottles in a bunker, with that FG, those babies are primed to explode!
lol thats what I thought too. But after a few days passed the Carbination no longer was an issue. It was odd. Of course there is that learning step we all must take the first go around.
I did a similar coffee stout but added chocolate as well. One of my personal favorites. Entered it into Sam Adams Long Shot contest and did fairly well. I'm probably going to have a coffee stout in some stage or another at all times, just really love it. Question for you dmpice when and how did you use your coffee grounds?
