Egyptian Beer
I was at the Nova and National Geographic site lookinga round, and they were talkingabotu Egyptian Beer. Its supposidly not like the beer we have but so similar they began marketing it in limited supply. I was wondering if anyone has a recipe for it or knows anything about it?
About the only thing I heard was in Discovery channel a few months ago. They briefly talked about the Egyptians and some stone tablets they found with recipes on them. All that was said is they used bread, crumbs, and some grains to make it. The description was VERY vague.
Most of the show consisted of a Budweiser factory tour, BOOOOORING.
The oldest recipe I have seen was from George Washington on making a big beer, which translated into a porter. It was for 30 gallons. You can still find the recipe online.
I don't know if you'd want to drink it, tastes have evolved with the rest of our civilization. I don't think hops show up until 1600's ?
Don't Papazian and Mosher make a habit of trying to recover & brew ancient recipes? I seem to recall seeing some very odd stuff in both books...
I think it would be interesting to try out these ancient recipes as a part of a Homebrew club, but I honestly can't see brewing them by myself. Even if by some miracle they weren't considered slightly toxic & even tasted fine, it would be much more fun as a learning experience/group project.
I found out a bit more on my hunt.................
here is alink to it.. there is even an internal link to the experiemnt on tutankamun ale
