Glacier hops for 22$ a pound
I'm going to do either Thirsty's ESB next, or brewchez's ESB next, I havn't decided, but both have a staggering amount of hops in them, and the LHBS where I buy my grain really rakes you over the coals for kent goldings, like 4 dollars an ounce. Since I was looking at 8 oz of hops, I needed another alternative. My hobby store that is close to me has hops, but you never know what they are going to have. I just bought a pound of glacier on ebay for 22 dollars, and free shipping. I was skeptical at first, but it was Midwest brewers online ebay store? I never knew there was such a thing. On there site, the have the discounted hops, but shipping was 7 dollars.
So this will be my first time making an ESB, and using glacier hops we will see how it goes. Has anyone ever used glacier?
Midwest homebrew supply in minneapolis has them for 1.50 an ounce last time I checked. I bought 7 paks. I used glacier a few times but I am usually on the low side of the bitterness scale in recipes so really didn't notice anything special about them. I used them to make the righteous ale in the joy of homebrewing book. It came out real good but was midrange in bitterness. I like them.

@ $22 a Pound I would buy as many as possible after receiving the first shipment and seeing how they are packaged (packed in vacuum sealed Foil bags preferably) and then put them in the cooler. $22 per LB or more are the prices that commercial brewers where paying for hops for the 2007/2008 season , a record for hop prices because of the Worldwide hop shortage .
I can definitely see a Glacier hopped ESB. I did an all Glacier hopped IPA and it gave off a little earthy tone, much like other English hops, but also brought some lemon citrus in there.

Yea, I hope it turnes out ok we'll see. I like using hops I never used before, but it's always kinda freaky at first.

So what's it going to be then....
Brewchez' ESB
or
Thirsty's ESB
Keep in mind Thirsty brews every week because he doesn't know what he's doing.
I only brew once a month because I am too busy posting on this message board pretending to know what I am doing.
My last though on this is that if you are going to add vinyl to the ESB then brew Thirsty's.
Wow, I guess we are going to keep bringing up that vinyl brown. You know, you try to share your mistakes so people can see that even though i'm Charming, witty, and roughishly handsome I am still not perfect, ha ha.
Now on to business, Probably going to be Yours Brewchez, as there is not as much specialty grain, and not as much hops. Even though Thirsty's brews keep winning award after award, i'm sure this little slight will not bother him in the least.
I'm hoping for this weekend, we'll see how the weather is.

Awards smwoards...
I need to get my act together and start submitting more beers back into the competition circuit so Thirsty and I can continue to duke it out. In order to do that though I guess I need to start brewing more regularly damn it.
Well, I got the glacier hops on friday, unfortunately this weekend is a bust to make a batch. Got sick on friday, and i'm just starting to feel ok now, plus there is a snow storm, and I don't feel like dragging my 100lbs of wort across the driveway to put it on my burner and have it spilling all over the place.
I am understanding the benifits of having 2 propane burners now, I think i'm going to have to put that on my to get list before a march pump. I heat the sparge water on my stove now, and do the whole lautering process in my kitchen, then I bring the 15 gallon pot full of wort to my driveway and put in on the turkey fryer. Somthing is going to have to change, as this is quickly becomming the trickiest part of my brewday. I thought about doing the lautering process right in the garage, and that is probably what i'm going to do until I get a second burner.

EXACTLY...
Working with two burners is so much easier for brew day. I suppose that fly sparging would maybe make the process a little easier with one burner, but two is a breeze. Once you get that second burner you'll be tempted to try my large mash and two beer approach with steeping grains.
Just remember that you'll need a second kettle with that second burner, because you'll be pulling wort into one kettle, but you need the other for water.
