Hangover Remedies
I got inspired from the post about "Redeyes" to start a place for people to post their favorite hangover remedies.
The Redeye remedy that I know of is a glass of half beer, half tomato juice and a large dose of tobasco sauce.
My roommate in college used to drink "Emergen-C" after a night of partying.
I've also heard eating a banana is good for hangovers. Something about the potassium. Anyone else?
Emergen-C is good stuff all around. My wife and I drank that during her labor to keep our energy levels up (we were up all night). I'm sure that would be good for hangovers.
The best hangover remedy? Don't get drunk. ![]()
If you do drink too much, drink 2 - 3 glasses of water before you go to bed. Hangovers are largely due to dehydration, so the 2 - 3 glasses of water will help a lot.
coffee & john coltrane.
I try to pound a couple glasses of water and take a couple ibuprofen before bed. When I wake up I'll try to pound more water to stay hydrated. Vitamins in general seem to help. It also helps to drink a beer or two when you wake up too.
My way to avoid hangovers?
Drink plenty of water before you go to bed. This is probably the most important step. When you wake up in the morning, drink more water, and eat something substantial. You may not feel like eating, but a good-sized breakfast helps a lot. I have heard that a vitamin suppliment for B12 helps, but I have not noticed a benefit when I take it vs. when I don't.
there is a fantastic root herb called kudzu. it is an extremely effective remedy for all things alcohol related. you ingest a little bit througout your night of drinking, and before you go to sleep. it aids in the elimination of alcohol from the body before it reaches (very) toxic levels. i REALLY field tested it. i got wasted drunk every night for a couple months in my twenties. woke up the next morning feeling fresh and raring to go. no ill effects at all. hence, i was able to get drunk again and again and again. i dont recommend this. im just saying that this root really works, at least for some people. i admit, i am in incredible shape other than drinking. i eat very well, exercise a little bit. i lift weights, they are 6 gallons, and weigh 48 pounds when full of liquid! :)
but this root has a lot of studies backing it up as a great tonic and for elimination of alcohol. just google it : kudzu
Hangover is not new to me. Infact, I'm used to it. Everytime I have hangover, I used to eat any foods. This helps reduce the rate at which alcohol enters your blood and thus can help reduce the after-effects. My mother used to give me a vitamin C tablets. These help break down the alcohol content in your body. Actually, you can avoid hangover. Don't drink if your stomach is empty. This is the common mistake of many.
Try reading or looking through the book "Drink as Much as You Want and Live Longer". I read this book that a friend let me borrow and have followed the instuctions since about July of this year and have not had a hangover since, a couple of times I should have had to pay for it too! It does involve drinking water too as some other posters have written but has lots of other ideas and "life-force nutrients".
And no, I do not have any affilitation whatsoever to the book, publisher or author, can't even remember the author's name right now, it just works for me and a couple of my other brewing buddies are using it too.
I've never tried this before so I can't vouch for it but my coworkers swear by it. They claim that if you know you're going to really tie one on, take the recommended dose of tylenol or aspirin before you get started. They claim to be invinsible to hangovers. I never drink enough to get hungover.
Hangovers are a combination of two things, the first and foremost problem is dehydration. This causes the pounding headaches, drowsiness, irritability etc... The second problem comes from a lack of vitamin B. The breakdown of alcohol depletes your body of Vitamin B. So here's the key to preventing and treating hangovers. Say you've had a long night of drinking with your buddies and you know you're going to feel awful in the morning because you've had way too much. Drink about a pint of water before you go to bed and take a multivitamin that includes vitamin B. Then, when you wake up drink another pint of water and take another vitamin. I've tried this with out using Ibuprofen (advil) or acetaminophen (tylenol) and within an hour i feel great. It is a whole lot better than using pain relievers and works just as well with out them.
Before taking acetaminophen read the warning on the back of the bottle.
I don't have a problem with hang overs drinking ales.
I can't remember having one yet from drinking homebrew.
But yeah the key is to stay hydrated.
The absolute best way is to sleep it off but should you be forced to get up for any reason, Work, Family Stuff, etc. Here are a few tips that have gotten me through many terrible hangover... First, I drink about a liter of water before I hit the rack(assuming I'm in a state to remember to drink water...) Then refill and place by the bed for drinking if I wake up in the middle of the night. The next morning I drink another liter and usually followed by caffeine(ideally coffee). The next big thing is a multivitamin and if I don't have any stomach problems, some ibuprofen for the head ache. You want to watch out for this because if you have a queasy stomach this will only upset it more due to the coating on pills. Then you just have to suck it up and wait for it to go away... Good luck, and hopefully you've never had a hangover like I have...
Another thing, different kinds of alcohol will have different effects the next day but drink enough and you will know it...
Also, the thing about taking meds before you start drinking such as ibuprofen or Advil, will actually cause you to get drunker, faster as well as being more likely to have stomach issues...

I agree with the water thing, in college after a night of drinking I would always drink a couple glasses before bed. Worked like a charm.
DO NOT TAKE ADVIL OR TYLENOL DURING OR IMEDIATELY AFTER DRINKING!!! It ravages your liver and is insanely bad for you. water, greasy late night breakfast and a couple of aspirn in the morning always does the trick for me. Stay away from "rail" booze, I think hangover is included in the distilation process.

Ultimate hangover killer!
Pedialyte, without question. This stuff can be purchased at any grocery store and is used for kids that are sick (diarrhea). Bascically it is full of electrolytes. Alcohol robs your body of electrolytes and water of course. This stuff has not failed me yet.
