Heineken Lover




Does anyone have a recipe for a beer that will taste like Heineken???



 

there is one in the book "Clone Brews" but i havent tried it yet.

it goes something like this for a  5 gal batch

steep 4oz of 2.5L German Light Crystal Malt for 20 min in 1/2 gallon water

sparge that with 1/2 gallon water and add to brew pot  for a total brewpot volume of 1.5 gallons

3.3# Light Malt LME
3.25# xtra light DME
1/2 oz. norther brewer hops 50min
1 oz. german hallertau Hersbrucker hops 50min
add water to pot to total volume of 2.5 gal
1/2 oz. german hallertau Hersbrucker  10min
1tsp irish moss 10min
wyeast Danish lager yeast

thats the basics of it minus particular brands etc,

i did make my own version similar to this but havent done it yet.

 

Please excuse my ignorance but I'm new to this.  I don't know what "LME" or "DME" means.  Are all those other ingredients available @ a brew shop or do I have to order online?  Lastly, can I use a lager yeast in an ale or does this recipe have to be lager?  Thanks for your time.

 

LME and DME stand for light malt extract and dark malt extract, respectively.  These are very common ingredients, so your local home brew store should definitely have these.

If you want to get the crispness of a heineken, you will want to lager your beer.  You can use lager yeasts at higher temperatures, but these become 'steam beers' (a commercial example would be the Anchor Brewing Company).



 

Does this beer HAVE to be lagered or can it be fermented and aged at higher temps?

 

Actually, LME is Liquid Malt Extract and DME is Dry Malt Extract.  Any homebrew shop should carry both of them.  You can use a lager yeast in an ale, but it most definitely will not be the taste you are going for in this case.  It will no longer be a crisp clean beer.  If you want to make it as an ale, just use a clean finishing ale yeast like US-05, but again, it's just not the same as lagering.
