hocus pocus
so i've been reading some mixed reviews on this beer. but i had one on draught at a local bbq place tonite and will say i'm hooked. never found myself to be into hops before, but then again i never really took the time to TASTE them before i started brewing. i could just be a hop head in training. does anyone have a clone of this beer?
Hocus Pocus is my favorite beer. i drink it whenever I'm not drinking my homebrew, so maybe like once a month hehe. Magic Hat did a nice job with this beer. Every year they come out with a mystery beer to see if people like it, Hocus Pocus was last year's mystery beer (i think it was last year) and I know atleast where I got the beer they were always running out of it. This year's mystery beer isn't that great, too malty for my liking reminding me of their #9.
Clone wise, I don't know where to begin. I'm stil in my first year of brewing; besides cascade, centennial, chinook, willamette, fuggles, and nugget I don't have a good grip of what hops brings what to a beer. I think there is some coriander in the beer, maybe some grains of paradise because it sort of reminds me of sam adams summer ale, some wheat extract, but that's just kind of guessing for me. The hops to me don't give the classic cascade or centennial bite, it's more flowery to me then grapefruity, maybe there's a little of those hops in it though. In all, it's a wheat and pale ale blend.
Another good beer, kind of similar in texture atleast is 6 point Righteous Ale if you can ever find it.
'Noobs'
Hocus Pocus definitely isn't a mystery beer - possibly it was once, but not in 2006. It's Magic Hat's summer seasonal and it's oh so delicious. I am also looking for a clone recipe - I agree with Noobs, definitely a wheat/pale mix, with and interesting hop schedule. Can't put my finger on any of it. Goddamn Magic Hat.... switching to twist-offs and not publishing clone recipes.
Hocus Pocus is good, but Circus Boy is way better...at least IMO.....I did once see a #9 clone recipe...I'll look for it in my notes and post it if I can find it.......may not be what you're looking for, but it might give a better idea of what they use for something...and it's a good beer too....
