How About a uhh, BrewinKB Community Brew?
Styrian Goldings for one of the hops for sure. Pretty much every recipe for a Belgian style beer seems to include them. I'm not real familiar with Belgian yeast strains but I am sure both Wyeast and White Labs would each have a couple good candidates.
I will be doing some research on the different Belgian styles of beer this weekend. Heading to Milwaukee to visit my daughters and my brother and one of our stops will be The Bomb Shelter. They don't have a lot of beer on tap, but they stock 350 different beers, according to their blog. A pretty fair selection of Belgian styles, so in the interest of scientific research I am willing to try as many as I can. Gonna be a tough job, but no one said science was easy. ![]()
And of course I will have to stop at Northern Brewers and pick up a few things. I am sure I can find a thing or two I can spend a couple bucks on.
Rural, I didn't know you're a midwest man. Have an... educational trip.
Yea, I'm from Wisconsin, outdrinking every other state since 1845. ![]()
Didn't make it to the Bomb Shelter. Went to the Cafe Hollander instead. Pretty much all Belgian styles, and lots of them on tap. And all with the proper glassware. I learned I like Trippels better than Dubbels, and Quads better than Trippels. I also learned that scientific research can get spendy and a designated driver is indispensable when doing in depth scientific research. ![]()
Stopped at Northern Brewer, was going to pick up another Fixed Gear kit but they were all out of Special B!!?!!?? So I got their Rye Maibock, and going to do a psuedo-lager with Wyeast 2124. They recommended Wyeast 1214 for a Dubbel so i picked up a pack of that and a White Labs 005 for my next batch of Mac and Jacks. And a pound of D-90 Candi Syrup for the Dubbel.
So all in all a fun and educational weekend.
Come on guys, no progress on a recipe from anyone?
Maybe instead of brewing one recipe we could each brew whichever style of Belgian we wanted to. So if someone wants to brew a Belgian style IPA they could, or a Dubbel, Trippel, Wit, Blonde or whatever. We could each post the recipe that we brew, How our brewday went and our impression of the finished beer. Then being as Hogarthe was so kind as to do the pairings for our last beer swap that didn't happen;), we could do a spring swap and include our Belgian to get feedback from our fellow brewers.
Maybe this would be a more palatable plan, people would have a style or region and brew what they would like within that style. Just a thought.
