How much grain in a partial mash recipe?

If one were trying to formulate a partial mash recipe, what is a good ratio for extract to grain?  I was playing around with the Recipator, and the numbers looked good for what I did make up...next time I'll save it and post what I had...I didn't know if it was actually feasible.  I had to guess 65% efficiency, don't know if that's even close for partial mash........

The ratio of fermentables to extract really doesn't matter.  Partial mashing is the same priciple as steeping specialty grains except it is with grains that need to be mashed.  If you have a five gallon batch and you are mashing in a three gallon stockpot you can use around 5 pounds of grain.  You can use your specialty grains and fill the rest with base malt.

You can mash as much or as little of the total fermentables as you like.  Efficiency is going to be different for everyone with a different mash setup.

I think its best to start with 1/3 of the fermentables from a partial mash, then as you are more comfortable you can increase that ratio.

But at what point does a partial mash process become a partial extract process????hmm

I used partial mashes after the first batcth I brewed .....I had a Listermann Mini-mash tun and usually mashed around 2 lbs of my base grain along with my specialty grains......usualiy around 4-5 pounds total......I averaged around 60% efficiency........it's good practice if you plan on moving to all-grain.....my first all-grain batch was a breeze....I had done about 25 partial mash batches before I moved on......

25 batches before moving on!!!!
I did 5 and was like.... Why am I wasting my time with the extract anymore?

The only hurdles to overcoming partial mash to all grain is space and money for newer equipment.

That's what I figured.  Me too.  I just didn't brew much at all until I could afford the new gear.
