Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat

I'm trying to figure out a clone recipe for Sunset Wheat and was wondering how much Belgian Witbiers compare to this beer so I can get an idea on how much corriander and orange peel I would need to add. I will probably use Whitelabs Hefeweizen IV Ale yeast unless you guys think that the American Hefeweizen would be a better match......I'm looking for the citrus and apricot flavors from the yeast.

GOODBREWING......

i'm doing the same, but figed i would use the American Wheat guidelines. the Lein web site give you some details about the beer like the type of hops used:

http://www.leinie.com/sunset_wheat.html

here is what i've come up with : Edited 6/13/07

6.00 lb Wheat Liquid Extract
0.50 lb Muntons Light LME
0.50 lb Cara-Pils/Dextrine
0.50 lb 10L Crystal Malt
1.00 lb Wheat, Torrified
2.00 oz Cluster [5.70%] (60 min) Hops
1.00 oz Cluster [5.70%] (30 min) Hops
1.00 oz Orange Peel, Sweet (Boil 30.0 min)
1.00 oz Corriander (10 min)
1.00 oz Blueberry extract ( at bottling / kegging)
5.00 gal Local Water Water
1 Pkgs American Wheat Ale (Wyeast Labs #1010) Yeast-Ale

Est Original Gravity: 1.049 SG
Est Final Gravity: 1.011 SG
Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 4.9 %
Bitterness: 28.6 IBU
Est Color: 7.9 SRM

thinking about brewing it tomorrow

Don't forget the corriander.....let me know how it comes out....I'm real interested in this one!!!

GOODBREWING.....

I made a clone of this one that came out great (by the way, it's awesome to see people in other neck of the woods wanting to clone LEINIES!!!)  I used:

7lbs wheat malt
3 lbs 2 row malt
.5 lb 10L crystal malt
the zest of one fresh orange
1 tsp roughly crushed corriander seed

came out pretty darn close and mighty tasty  I used tettanger hops instaead of cluster  (which is in SSW) because I had leftovers and it was really good.

by the way, I'm just curious if leinies is milking this going national with SSW thing... how much do the get for a 6 pack in all your neck of the woods??

I think it's $5.99 a six, but I haven't had any in a bottle......I live in Ohio and was visiting some people outside the Pittsburgh Area and they had it on tap and I tried it cause I like Leinie's Red. I had one at dinner and called my cousin to take me back there that night so I could have a few more....I tried to get him to try one and he said he didn't like draft beer and to get him a Foster's.....I gave him a sip of mine and damn near had to run with it to keep him from it......I got him one on the next round.......I've been trying to get him into homebrewing.......sent him the gift subscription of BYO last year....a 2 for 1 deal....I figured that might get him going on the homebrewing thing.....I might have enough equipment to give him a basic set-up, he'll just need a secondary and bottle capper.

By the way, what yeast did you use???

GOODBREWING.......

Brewtown_Bill, what would the equivalent extract recipe look like? what wheat/malt ratio would i be looking to get to convert your recipe?

my ladyfriend is a huge leinies drinker, and maybe, just maybe, if i bribe her with a beer clone of her liking i will be given permission to use up more space for my brewing activities! especially since i have yet to see leinies anywhere out here in seattle.

if you brew yours, Brew_Luva, let me know how it turns out. i am always looking for ways to get permission to use more space!

i will add the coriander seed to it

I happened to run across this.........

and this..........."Dick Leinekugel visited, I got some cool stuff.

Well I had a few chats with Dick. He seemed fine. I asked him whether they use fruit extracts in the Sunset Wheat? He said, you can taste something? I said Yes. I said either Blueberry or Blackberry. He said they put Blueberry in the beer right before kegging/bottling" .........

I see the recipe calls for only 1.1 oz at bottling, just enough to know somethings there but not enough to give it a real blueberry taste......just a fruity taste......

GOODBREWING......

blueberry?, hmmm. i didnt notice that. gonna have to sample that again
