Mack and Jacks African Amber clone

Thanks for the welcome!

Well I'm excited about these batches. Made one Sat using orange peel  and a 2 gal boil, and one Sunday using Tangalo peels with a 3 gal boil. They were BOTH still bubbling this morning, Friday!!!
True Ive only made 6 other batches but the longest one of  them has bubbled has been from Sun to Wed.

Great news, My mom is comming back from Seattle tomorrow, and she's bringing me a half gallon growler of the Mac and Jacks.  This was a long time comming, 10 years plus.  Not only can I compare it to my clone now, but I GOT THE YEAST BABY.
I stole somebody's beer, then I looped it I looped it.  For everyone under 35 yea that was a 3rd base reference.
This beer is dryhopped, and unfiltered.  So I should be able to get somthing to work with, any pointers on pulling the yeast "The easy way".  would be helpful.  I don't want to breakout the pressure cooker or all that flambango.  I was thinking about just doing a starter, and dumping some of the beer in, and setting it on the stir plate for 2 days.

I would let the whole growler sit cold in your fridge for a couple days to get the yeast to settle out.  Carefully pour the beer out into several glasses or a pitcher leaving the yeast behind.

Then I'd put a quart of starter wort in the growler and put it on the stir plate.  In a couple days add another quart or wort.  You could always chill again to resettle, decant (pour off) and add more wort.  Be ready to brew next week.

There are a couple problems I see for you:
1.  You have to wait to drink the beer.  I am sure your excited, but do you want to drink the original beer or do you want to capture the yeast for your own brewing.  Patience.
2.  You have to drink all the beer at once.  Not a big deal I guess, but maybe you weren't planning on drinking it all at once.
3.  There are no guarantees the growler was sanitized enough prior to filling.  I was probably clean enough to serve beer out of, but if you are going to try and do a starter in it (or move even move the yeast to a starter flasks) you might grow up just as much bacterial contaminant as you will yeast.  Grab yeast from a growler is a little different than from a bottle that likely came off of a steamed bottling line.

Good luck.

Thanks for the imput, and i'll follow those directions.  However as the good things in life are worth waiting for, I just couldn't wait any longer.  I poured a small amound into a brandy snifter, I thought I was going to be dissapointed, I thought that now that i'm experienced enough to pick up on all of the flavors, and aromas, that I would be able to figure this out in a second, I couldn't.
This beer still has that citrus taste that you just can't place, it still has that beautiful hop aroma, and it still has that depth, and breadth of malt.  This beer finishes clean, and fruity, and is just to god damn good in so many ways.
Hope I can pull this yeast, we will see how it turns out.

Congratulation on your yeast acquisition, especially when it comes on the two year anniversary of this thread.
Keep us posted on the yeast recovery.  I am especially interested, cause one of my fellow brewers moved to Seattle this summer & is coming back for the local competition in a couple weeks.  Sez he's going to bring me a growler of this wonderful stuff.
I've never tasted the original, so really looking forward to it.

I've seen a bartender at a local brew pub pull a browler out of a box, not wash it or rinse it out and fill it with beer. So it's a crap shoot as to whether the growler you got was sanitized or not. Likely not.

Good news, my brother used 1 step clenser on the growler before he got it filled.  I bought him the same Mr. beer kit that I started with for christmas, and he had the basic knowledge enough to Sanitize the growler.
He also called the brewery, and asked if they pasturize the beer, and they do not.  I can already see a slight film of yeast settling out on the bottom of the growler.  So far so good.

I like how you convinced your brother that one step is an effective sanitizer.   You definately want to keep him in the dark about what is a real sanitizer and what isn't.  You certainly don't want his brewing getting better than yours too quickly.
The only problem with that plan is that he has "sanitized" your growler with a cleaner.  I hope this works out for you.

I know what your saying, but at least it was some type of cleaning, and not just filled right out of the box.  The one step came with the kit, so it's better than nothing being done to the bottle.

I know you know what I am saying.  I just didn't think this thread had enough posts in it yet for anyone to take seriously, so I am trying to add to it.
Maybe now at 18 pages someone will check it out and brew this beer too....  big_smile
