Need recipe using these ingredients-
That OG is low. I also would have thought it came in at 1.040-1.050. If you took the sample before you mixed the top off water, I would think the reading would too high. Seeing as you already added yeast, you can't take another OG, the yeast is doing it's work, as you mentioned you already have some trub at the bottom.
Did you take temperature into account? Most hydrometers are calibrated to read 60F, and adjustments need to be made if the temp is off; but then again, that's a rather large adjustment to have to make.
Regardless, you have not wasted anything. Even if it's a lower than desired abv, it's still a beer that you made. Never waste beer, especially beer that you brewed.
I found out possibly why my OG was so low. I was keeping my hydrometer in a test tylinder with sterilizer to keep it handy for quick readings. When I took it out today the hydrometer had about a tblspn of sterilized water INSIDE of it. I can't figure out how or where the water is getting in but it must have some kind of pinhole or crack and this made the hydrometer too heavy too float. Now, to find a new hydro
That would do it for sure.....At least hydrometers are fairly cheap......
The glass can get pretty thin on these things occasionally. Its a flaw in manufacturing. This results in pinholes. I have heard of these holes before so its not anything you did.
Well got this brewed up, and been drinking it for about a week now. Left it in the primary for 12 days then primed with sugar, bottled,left at fermenting temp for 7 days. Tastes pretty good! Everyone seems to like it. I added a little bit too much water to my carboy so it watered it down a bit but that makes it easier to drink 6 or 7 without them being too thick. It is a nice hoppy amber ale and everyone drinking it seems to enjoy it. The alcohol is a little low (unsure of actual abv because of broken hydrometer) could this be from using dry yeast? I figured there were plenty of fermentables to convert to a good alcohol content. I am trying my first batch with liquid yeast this weekend so I will see if that helps with the efficiency of alcohol creation.
