Pliny My Ass Impy IPA
So I was talking to my buddy about making a boomer Impy IPA, Hopsdirect has some great deals by the pound right now, http://www.hopsdirect.com/hops/leafhops.html and I can get 3#s cheaper than I could get my standard impy hop order for, so I figure why not use them?
I have this on tap right now, but with a much more modest hop schedule, the current is at 121 IBUs, and I used 5 oz per keg to dryhop, gonna crank this one up and see if I can make something like a Moylan's Hopsickle, or Pliny the Younger, and will befittingly calling it- "Pliny My Ass"

Whatyall think?
That's making my eyeballs pop out of my head just reading it. You've finally succumbed to the west coast virus of liquid as a vehical for hops, Ha ha. With the corn sugar add it should bright your og up closer to 1.100 don't you think?
Looks friggin fantastic, and i'm curious to see what the rye does to this, i've never had a rye beer. Is this your first time using rye?

That OG is including the sugar. I have been experimenting with the rye in my last 4 or 5 IPAs. It is nice. If you havent had one yet, try Bear Republic's Hop Rod Rye. It is a great one, good value. Or come on out to the Bear Hole Brewing Company and try one cold off the tap!
I'll try to come up to Springfield early october. I'll try to time it so your there next time, Ha ha. I'll bring some of that strawberry rhubarb wheat, and the new ESB.

That sounds like a good idea.
Just copied and printed out your recipe for future consideration. WOW!!!! Over 30 ozs. of hops eh? Gotta hand it to you thats going to be a...PLINY MY ASS, haha. When I can replenish my bank account from that shiny piece of equipment that stole all of my money I may be able to afford all those hops. I've been thinking about another IIPA and just haven't been that happy with any of mine. I think I'll give yours a whirl. I think for mine I may sub the melanoidin for munich but your recipe looks...well it makes me thirsty and I'm really not much of a hop head anymore either.

I absolutely love this beer! I highly recommend it.
Well brewed this up today, came out a real nice amber color, my garage smells freakin awesome!
These are just the bittering hops going in:
Good lord! I bet that was tough to keep it from going nuclear on you.
I knew you were brewing this today. When I went outside I could smell the hops all the way in Eastern MA. ![]()
Wow!
Sounds like something the hop-maniac that I am would love.
Hopsdirect are not only very low-priced, but great people to deal with too.
I ordered a few pounds last month, all whole leaf, and they accidentally shipped pellets. When I called and told them, they offered to send a UPS call tag for return and immediately ship the correct order.
I told the lady thet I could deal with the pellets, with the exception of a pound of cascades that I was going to use for dry hopping. She told me they would ship me a pound of cascade whole leaf at no charger and to keep the pellets and share them with a friend. I got the Cascade replacement much faster than the original order, which I specified UPS ground, so they didn,t scrimp on shipping.
No arguement from them and great service too! I know where my hops are coming from in the future. Good quality stuff too!

Are you going to send this one in to the Big Beers Festival? That's a nice pic btw ![]()
Thinking about brewing up and Imperial IPA next weekend for this comp. Deadline is 12-30-09!

I have never entered that comp before- so I think I will! I have a couple other big beers that may make that trip as well.
Heya Thirsty, I was looking to maybe make a batch of this, how was the final outcome on it?

It was good, however I wasted a lot of hops dryhopping with whole leaf. I used a bucket as my secondary to fit all of the hops, PITA to siphon, and it wasnt even crazy over the top with aroma. I have much better luck dryhopping with pellets.
The recipe is sound for the bitterness and malt backbone though. Make sure to use a very clean yeast. The corn sugar is a must also, to get that Fg down.
