Sam Adams Black Lager?
I'm assuming someone has tried this and I'm wondering if someone could help formulating a recipe to create something similar. It doesn't have to be a clone, if it were I would just go get the sams, I just like the style. I like the chocolatey coffee like tastes of bocks and porters, but I struggle to finish them, they just don't sit well. The Black Lager has the same taste, but is much more drinkable, to me atleast. I would assume it uses similar ingredients but hits a lower gravity. So if anybody has any partial mash recipe suggestions, they would be appreciated.
The Sam Adams Black Lager is a Schwarzbier. I did a quick google for "Schwarzbier recipe" and there seem to be quite a few out there. Unfortunately, I have never attempted a schwarzbier, or even a lager for that matter, so I'm not able to recommend any. Hope this helps though.
Check out the Cats Meow for some good recipes...also check Tasty Brew, they have some good ones too.
I brewed this last year and it came out really good.......
Midnight Lager
5.00 lb Munich Malt (9.0 SRM) Grain
4.00 lb Pilsner (2 Row) Ger (2.0 SRM) Grain
0.50 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 40L (40.0 SRM) Grain
0.25 lb Carafa II (412.0 SRM) Grain
0.25 lb Chocolate Malt (350.0 SRM) Grain
60 min 1.50 oz Hallertauer Mittelfrueh [3.50 %] (60 min) Hops
20 min 0.50 oz Hallertauer Mittelfrueh [3.50 %] (20 min) Hops
0 min 0.50 oz Hallertauer Mittelfrueh [3.50 %] (0 min) Hops
San Francisco Lager (White Labs #WLP810) [Starter 1500 ml] Yeast-Lager
Notes
Add the Chocolate and Carafa malts after starch conversion, before you raise to mashout.........
Ferment at 60 degrees.....
Somehow, I knew Dartgod would have a good recipe for this.....
I might give this a try using an Ale yeast. It may not be to style, but eh.. what the hell..if its drinkable, id be happy.
Maybe a WLP002 im thinking..
Use the San Fran Lager yeast.........you can ferment up to 65 degrees with it and it is Most preferred yeast for style according to Whitelabs.........
Any chance you have a partial mash recipe? Here is the description from the sam adam's website:
Samuel Adams® Black Lager is brewed with a medley of malts including 2-row Harrington pale, Munich, and a touch of Weyermann dehusked Carafa® . The dehusked carafe gives the beer this deep color and clean roast flavor with out the drying astringency of the husk. The beer is finished with a balanced hopping of the traditional German Spalt Spalter Noble Aroma Hops.
I don't know if this can inspire someone for a full recipe? Also, since I'm not trying to make a clone, can anyone suggest similar specialty grains and or hops to the ones listed to allow for some creativity? I'm only on my third batch so I'm still a little noob.

The problem with Cats meow type recipe places is that the recipes are jsut these brewerless entries. You have no idea if the recipes are any good.
Forums like this are the best place to get recipes from. I never brew recipes without any information about their source. I need a little more research than that.
Then again, I'd brew anything Dartgod gave me... but I trust those recipes.

Of course..but I like to look over some random recipes if I'm trying a new style, just to see how others get it done, mixed with reading up on the style as well. I've never brewed a recipe off of CM3 or anything like that myself.
