Session beer

so the local club im trying to get involved with has listed thier first competition, for April, to be a session beer, with an OG of 1.040 or less. i think i'm going to do an american lite lager for it, but what other styles could easily fall into this category, or does it not matter and you can make what you want and adjust it so the OG meets the criteria?

I don't have any recipes in front of me, but many pales, ambers, and some wheat beers should fit the bill just fine.

I assume 5 gallons??

8# pale, 1/2# crystal (20, 30, 40), or 5# wheat, 3# pale... then whatever hops.

Something along those lines should give you a gravity around 1.040. For each pound of domestic pale malt I account for 5 points of gravity, hence 5 points X 8 # = 40... that isn't a strictly rule of thumb, but it is usually close.

Thanks

I would say anything with 7# of extract and 1/2# to 1# of specialty grain, or any 7-8# pale malt bill with another pound or so of a specialty grain should do it for you.

There are just so many varieties out there. I rarely want a gravity that low, but if you only use that amount of malt I described above, and no more than 1# of speciality (or two half pound of different grains), that should get you close.

You could make a nice amber that way. 7# pale, 1/2# crystal 20L, 1/2# munich.... then add hops.
