Shaking Salt In Beer?

I suppose it's an acquired taste, but does anybody here shake salt in their beer? I'm not sure what the theory is behind it, but I still see people doing it in pubs.

By the way, I'd think that was the last thing anyone with hypertension should be doing.

I'd think that falls in the same category as putting tomato juice in your beer.  You might want to do any number of things to try to put some flavor in your Budweiser, but why do that with your homebrew?

I've had friends who put olives in their beer.  Granted, this was a horrible keg of Miller Light that they were drinking, but I personally couldn't stand the taste.

I used to drink a lot of Killian's and would get a cherry in it when I would get a draft at the bar.  It was mostly just a gimmick, but it really did taste good.  To each their own I guess.

I tried it. I really hate the taste.

kosher salt is good in corona. makes it fizz like crazy though.

Adding salt in beer makes more fizz.  But yes it decreases taste of the beer. It tastes bad after adding salt

I've seen some friends shaked salt in beer but I just ignored what they were doing. But now I'm curious to know some theory of shaking salt in beer.

maybe folks are just trying to get attention...

My grandfather used to shake salt into his beer, to 'flatten' it.  As far as I know it cuts the carbonation.

Having worked in a bar a number of years ago I've seen several people add salt to their beer,
as djgbrewing said it kills the cabontation.
Most said they do it to cut down on the belching in public.
I noticed it was mostly the ladies that did it, guys like to burp out loud, well the rednecks anyway.lol
big_smile

i sprinkle a little salt under the glass at the bar, that way it doesnt pick up the little napkin when i take a drink. other than that i'v only heard of people puttin salt in corona, but then again mexican breweries dont have bathrooms, you need somethin to kill the taste lmao

i know we homebrewers aren't the most health concious bunch but, putting salt in the beer may be the straw that, you know, tries to unblock my coronary artery.

Helo all! My father told me once that shaking salt in beer, over time, helped prevent against constant trips to the mens. It helps kill the need to urinate esp. after 4 or 5.
I hope thats not too rude...smile

I put salt in my beer. I just decided to try it and liked the flavor. I only add it to one beer I drink. I wasn't even aware that it was a common thing till I saw a guy on an old western do it just now. So I looked it up and here I am lol. I enjoy it tho.
