Whole blueberries in beer?



I have a question regarding some beer a friend of mine had while visiting the Boston area.  He told me of a beer out there that they put whole blueberries in.  If any of you have had this beer, know the name of the beer or manufacturer and/or the recipe I would love to have it.  It sounds very delicious.

There was a chain brewpub where I used to live that had a blueberry beer. (It shut down, and I can't for the life of me remember the name.) Anyway, it was basically an American style wheat beer with blueberry flavoring, and a few berries in the glass at serving. Unknown if there were berries in the ferment.

Sounds like Boston beer works.

Another popular one in New England is Maine's Bar Harbor blueberry.  But I don't think they float whole blueberries in theirs

I recently made great Blueberry wheat. Just find your typical American wheat recipe and add a can of Oregon fruit puree to the fermented. I like to add my fruit in primary after the majority of fermentation seems done.

I was just talking with my wife about this before I saw the post, we both remember drinking it. I keep thinking it was the Atlantic Brewing Company's Bar Harbor Blueberry, but not sure. More likely it was the Sea Dog's Bluepaw, if you have it at one of their brewpubs I believe they drop some in. Logan, they shut one down in Camden, if that was where you lived.

If you favor a blueberry, try a Black and Blue sometime, half Stout, half Blueberry, it is a treat.



 

It could be any number of local places.  If a bar has a blueberry beer on tap, they tend to do things like that, putting a few fresh blueberries in the glass makes for nice presentation.  It's also fun to watch the blueberries ride the CO2 bubbles to the top and then fall back to the bottom, over and over again.  So who knows what brand it was unless you happen to know what bar he was at.

Hmmm... while we're on the subject.. What would you all think of putting a blueberry in each bottle before bottling?  I just brewed a blueberry wheat that has a mild blueberry flavor, and instead of putting more blueberries in the secondary maybe I will just add one to each bottle.

 

Alex, can you post the recipe in the recipes area?

I am close to doing a blue of my own and am interested in what you did.

Adding one blueberry to each bottle probably won't have that big of an impact on the flavor/aroma.  I assume that it will probably sink, at least until the bottle is opened.  Sounds like a fun idea, though I'd probably make sure I was happy with where the flavor/aroma was at before I bottle and before I add the blueberry to the bottle.

I'll probably just do it to half of them or so... I plan to brew this again, I'm pretty confident in it.. the taste tests along the way have been good.. plus I need something to balance all the damn bitter IPAs and ESBs I drink.  smile

By the way, which blueberries are you using?  I've found Maine blueberries are so much better than regular blueberries, it's unbelievable...smaller, yet so much more flavor.

I made a Blueberry Ale last year and my neighbors loved it, the recipe was just an extension of a blonde ale recipe that I had. Any good light ale, blonde, or  american wheat ale (one with a neutral yeast 1056 or equivilent, not the german hefe yeast) will probably make a good base beer for a blueberry ale. The idea is to stay away from overpowering with hops, better to go with a subdued hop presence.  I used 4 pounds of frozen maine blueberries, but the aroma lacked a little. I think I will go with 4 lbs of fresh this year in the secondary and maybe add a touch of syrup at bottling to improve the aroma.

 

I've had Pumphouse Blueberry in Canada many times.  It's yummy.  I add a spoonful of frozen berries just before serving and the blueberries dance on the bubbles.
