If you look in March/April Zymurgy Pg 26, there is an interesting article about fermenter material and shape and how it relates to taste. Interestingly, the professionals polled in a blind taste test liked the beer brewed in plastic better than that in glass or stainless..... go figure. I say go for it!

I got a 7 gal conical from ebay for $225 (brewforlessnow.com), and it's just a time saver (no racking/secondary) and very easy to clean. It's also great as you can dump the hot wort into it without worrying over glass.

The less you have to fiddle with your fermenting beer the better.tongue

How are you cooling your wort after you've put it into the conical?  Are you not cooling your wort?
I assume you are cooling, so do you just let it sit in the fridge for a few hours to come to temp?
