Finings
Finings: Substances used to clarify beef after the fermentation process primarily by settling out suspended yeast and proteins. (Taken from "The Brewmaster's Bible" by Stephen Snyder)
Any examples of Finings? I'd be interested in trying some. ![]()
The most popular choice of finings seems to be Irish Moss. This is added about ten minutes before the end of the boil. For light lagers, Polyclar is a good choice, which is added into the secondary a few days prior to bottling or kegging. Two others are Isinglass and Gelatin, both of which I believe are added into the secondary. Packages of each should have instuctions, of course.
A bit of trivia: Isinglass is actually harvested from the internal organs of fish! How this was discovered to help beer clarity remains a mystery!
Cool - I'll check that out - thanks! (Northern Brewer, here I come!)
Gelatin goes in at secondary...irish moss at end of boil....last 15 min...you can do both...or I have had great luck with just cooling in fridge and give some time to settle.
