Randell

A vessel placed between the serving keg and the tap, filled with hops, to impart hop aroma to the poured beer.

Credit for this should probably go to Dogfish Head as they came up with it.  Well to be honest I don't know if they came up with the idea, but they did come up with the name - Randell the Enamel Animal...

It's essentially a hopback, except it's used with a finished beer.  The Randell tends to smooth out the beer as it lowers the carbonation and collects a great deal of hop oils, which coat the tongue.

Also makes a mess on the way to the glass.  I've never seen one work without pouring foam all over the place.

Haha, yea that's the truth.  If you make your own Randell you better have a pitcher to run the beer into so it can sit for a bit.  I've never seen the Randell used successfully going directly into a glass.  When DFH takes the Randell to beer events, they always put it into pitchers and just serve from the pitchers.  Makes life a whole lot less messy.

I've seen them used at local beer events here and always seem to have 4 pitchers next to it to let the foam settle.
