California Grapes wine
Hi All,
I checked with Frank Musto at M & M Produce here in Hartford, CT. and they are planning to have grapes from the following regions / counties of California:
§ Mendocino County - End of September, Early October
§ Sonoma County - End of September, Early October
§ Lodi - Mid September
§ Amador County - Late September
§ Central Valley - Early September
Can anyone comment on these areas and which may be more / less desirable for winemaking this fall. Last year I bought Cab, Merlot, Syrah & Zin, all from Central Valley and the quality ranged from mediocre to pretty good.
All comments and input appreciated.
Thanks
Hello clayton,
Which grape varietals will be available from which areas? I made a Zin and Cab from his Lodi grapes last year, and a Chardonay from the Amador grapes. This year I was thinking of trying the Mendocino grapes. Someone I know used the Mendocino grapes in 2005 and is very happy with them. I would be curious to know which varietals he's getting from some of those regions, specifically Zin and Syrah. Or I could call him myself...
Thank for Reply,
How we make grap wine?
Hello all,
I live just north of Lodi, I raise a small amount of wine grapes just for the home winemaker and me,,,,,, no I do not ship,,, you must understand these varieties do not ripen at the same time, some grapes may be in cold storage for up to two weeks or more before shipping. Any mildew or rot is just magnified by time you get your grapes. The other areas you are talking about make there own style of wines,,,, Lodi wine are typically very hardy and very new world. Heavy high alcohol reds and high alcohol whites come from Lodi and Amador area, also Paso Robles, hot days and cool nights lead to over ripeness and most likely a poor grape to field pack and then ship. Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, and the Anderson Valley grapes are your best bet if you can get them. Although you do understand you is most likely getting what the wineries here do not want. I believe I would look into frozen must, It may cost more, but your quality my be better. And a little soak time cannot hurt. If you want a hearty red with high alcohol, (new world) pick Lodi, If your prefer an old world litter red with more fruit, go with the other areas, of course only my opinion.... Happy Winemaking,,,,,, silverdove,,,aka Jerry Jardine. lascovasdejardim.com
