How Many Plums and gallons or pounds of plums needed for wine
Hello,
A friend of mine has a few plum trees, and we talked about making some plum wine out of the fruit.
Can anyone share some general info on how many pounds of plums it takes to make 'x' number of gallons of plum wine? Or how many five or six gallon buckets full of plums translates in to 'x' number of gallons of wine?
I have many 5 gallon carboys from making grape wines, so I would like to use those if possible, but I think it is going to take a lot of plums.
thanks!

Hi jacab,
Well, if you make it "the fruit wine way," ferment directly on the plums and use 3-6 lbs per gallon (depending on the body you want - I've had success with all amounts in this range). Use water to make up the difference.
If you want to do it "the white wine way," you have to press out the juice and you'll obviously need a lot more plums for that. I haven't done it this way yet (My plum tree only gave me 8 lbs this year ). I would imagine it translates much like grapes do. 15-20 lbs to produce a gallon.
Cheers!
