Specific gravity and fermentation lock...
Hi everyone. I started Day 1 with my wine kit today and I just had a few questions...
What can I do if the specific gravity is too high? I have been told to stir the wine longer if the SG is off, but I am not sure if this will help if it is too high.
Do I have to put a fermentation lock on the primary fermented? It says that I can cover with a "loose fitting lid or a tight fitting lid with a fermentation lock". Does this mean that if you choose the loose fitting lid, you don't need the fermentation lock?
I would really appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Daniel
Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply. I did mark the line on the bucket. The woman that sold it to me at the wine making shop showed me where to mark it. So I wasn't sure that if I chose to put the lid on loosely if I had to have the fermentation lock on or if the loose fitting lid allows the gases to escape.
The SG was supposed to be at 1.070 and was at 1.080 so it was quite a bit off. I wasn't sure if stirring would help lower it or if there were any other tricks.
That was pretty much the only questions that I had after the first day. I found that it wasn't specific in the instructions about what to do if the gravity was off. Anyway, if you could help that would be great
Thanks
Darren
