Tomato Wine
Dear Friends,
I've read in this forum that tomato wine is great. It never occurred to me before to make it, but now I'm overloaded with tomatoes. Is this a table wine, or a cooking wine? Is it really as good as people say? I'm either making spaghetti sauce or wine today, depending on your advice!
Thanks!

Hello noah,
I had the pleasure of tasting Martina's tomato wine a couple of weeks ago. Honestly, there is no wine it can be compared to. The nose reminded me of walking into a pizzeria and the taste a bit less so. It was almost reminiscent of sweet vermouth, but much more pleasant tasting to me. I would keep the alcohol level fairly low (10.5% to 11.5%) and perhaps add bananas for body.
If it were me, I'd make sauce and a batch of wine.
Good Luck!
andrew
I've never heard of tomato wine. I'd love to try it, but I don't know where I'd get the chance.
Maybe I'll have to check with my Italian friends?
Hello!
I'm new to the site and love all aspects of wine. This sounds really interesting. Does anyone have a recipe for it?
Go for the wine, definitely--best I ever made was with home grown tomatos. I don't think the final taste is tomato-y at all although the scent was reminiscient if you knew that was what it was made from. IMHO people go with the sweet fruits but they don't make the best wines.
Can you use home grown tomatoes? My bumper crop is coming in by the fold and this was a plant done in the ground last year. Let me know...

It's what I did, not using the best ones but the ones that fell a little green or blemished up so they didn;t look the best on the table. IMHO good home brewing uses up excess rather than the best of the crop which should be enjoyed as they are. There is nothing better in the world than fresh home grown tomatoes and basil.
